Ce film d’action inspiré d’une histoire vraie a déjà engrangé plus de 153 millions de dollars de recettes pour seulement 14,5 millions de budget.
Harassé par les médias américains, loué par les conservateurs, le film Sound of Freedom, traitant le sujet poignant du trafic d’enfants, bouscule le box-office et partage l’opinion des américains déjà fragmentés par diverses idéologies, mettant en lumière un fossé entre l’opinion de la presse traditionnelle qui le qualifie d’insipide et de déprimant et l’avis du public, qui a attribué un score parfait de 100 % sur le site Rotten Tomatoes et un A+ sur CinemaScore.
Le long métrage, qui s’inspire d’une histoire vraie, raconte le sauvetage héroïque d’enfants victimes de trafic. Un sujet qui aurait dû faire l’unanimité. Mais dans un pays partagé, culturellement, le film et ses motivations interrogent et divisent.
Accusé par les progressistes d’être un outil de promotion de théories complotistes de la mouvance Q-Anon, le film a été salué par les conservateurs : certains ont trouvé que « Ce qui est presque aussi intéressant que le film en lui-même, c’est la réaction qu’il semble provoquer dans les médias traditionnels, qui apparaissent déterminés à le détruire à tout prix », pourtant, « On aurait pu penser qu’un film qui fait la lumière sur le cauchemar caché du trafic d’enfants serait une cause plutôt admirable et digne de soutien ».
Le film fait surtout l’objet de nombreuses critiques, à cause de sa manière de décrire le trafic d’êtres humains et en raison des polémiques entourant l’acteur principal, Jim Caviezel, fervent catholique de 54 ans, a participé à plusieurs évènements organisés par la mouvance Q-Anon et défend la théorie complotiste.
Sound of Freedom, « nous rappelle que même s’il y a beaucoup de mauvaises personnes dans ce monde qui font les pires choses imaginables, il y a aussi des hommes bons qui se battent pour les envoyer en justice ».
Sortie en salles, le 4 juillet, jour de la fête nationale américaine, le film d’Alejandro Monteverde accumule 41 millions de dollars de recettes dépassant Indiana Jones. Le 20 juillet, la veille de la déferlante en salles des blockbusters Barbie et Oppenheimerr, il avait atteint les 100 millions. Et il pourrait terminer sa carrière au-delà des 150 millions..
Sound of Freedom ne propage pas explicitement les théories du complot. Mais sa dénonciation d’un réseau de pédocriminalité le rapproche de la secte d’ultradroite QAnon, qui a fait du trafic sexuel d’enfants son cheval de bataille et selon laquelle il existerait une cabale organisée par des élites internationales qui violenteraient et tueraient des enfants pour en extraire une hormone antivieillissement, appelée l’adrénochrome. De plus, cette proximité avec l’extrême droite à tendance conspirationniste et catholique devient plus évidente car le producteur et acteur secondaire du film, Eduardo Verástegui, est un fervent défenseur des lois anti-avortement, et un proche de Donald Trump, le réalisateur semble quant à lui appartenir à une droite chrétienne plus modérée et l’acteur principal, Jim Caviezel, est un catholique intégriste, un militant anti-avortement et un adepte des théories complotistes de QAnon.
