Parmi ces Hommes, Rachid Salim el Khoury dont le souvenir a été commémoré dans son village natal grâce au dynamisme du jeune maire de Berabara Monsieur Ralph Nader.
Rachid Salim el Khoury, « le poète du village » est né en 1887. Après des études faites à Beyrouth, Tripoli, Zahlé et Souk el Gharb, il voyagea, en 1913, au Brésil pour chercher fortune et où il mena une vie dure de marchand ambulant. Plus tard, il se déplaça vers les états unis où il travailla en tant que commerçant agrée.
Défendeur acharné de l’union arabe, il a combattu le colonialisme ce qui lui valut une privation de ses nationalités libanaise et syrienne et du droit de rentrer dans son pays. Akram Zuaiter le décrit comme le «le saint de l’unité arabe » et dit de lui « si les nationalistes avaient un saint, le poète du village seraient l’un d’eux ».
Il travailla pour collecter des contributions pour sa cause et refusa de s’acheter une maison car son plus grand souhait fut d’avoir une tombe dans son pays natal.
Il publia « Rachidiat » en 1916, « les villageois », « les ouragans », « trois iles » et « la littérature de l’indifférence » et de la vente de ses livres, il soutint la Palestine.
Après 45 ans d’expatriation, il rentra chez lui en 1958, mais déçu par la situation politique et le cours de événements, il retourna au Brésil, trois ans plus tard.
Après sa mort en 1981, son corps a été enseveli à Berbara dans une tombe que la mairie du village est en train de restaurer pour le commémorer. Cette tombe, et selon ses désirs, sera désormais surmontée par une croix et un Hilal. De même, un cheikh et un prêtre y célébreront la prière lors de la cérémonie de célébration qui aura lieu le 25 mai prochain.
