Pour ceux qui me connaissent ; mes amis, ma famille et tout mon entourage, je suis secouriste d’animaux (chiens, chats et parfois autres) à temps partiel. Le problème, c’est que parfois, je n’arrive pas à leur trouver des adoptants, alors, ne pouvant les remettre dans la rue, je les garde. Ce qui fait, j’ai fini par avoir chez moi, une dizaine de chats et un chien. Et, je ne suis pas la seule à affronter ce problème ; tous les secouristes que je connais s’en plaignent, mais rien à faire alors chacun fait de son mieux en toute bonne foi. Jusqu’au jour où j’ai lu un article consacré à l’histoire d’une dame vivant dans une petite maisonnée de quatre-vingt-quinze mètres avec son mari, une trentaine de chats et douze chiens qu’elle avait recueillis. Le sujet m’a profondément touchée car je me sentais concernée, surtout, qu’on y considérait la dame et son mari, atteints d’une certaine maladie psychologique appelée le syndrome de Noé.
Alors, je me suis jetée sur mon ordi et mes livres à la recherche d’explications. Au fait, il parait qu’il s’agit d’une maladie psychologique qui consiste à posséder trop d’animaux de compagnie. Plus exactement, on possède plus d’animaux que l’on en peut héberger, nourrir et soigner correctement et dans le même temps, on dénie cette incapacité. Les malades sont vraiment attachés à leurs animaux et n’envisagent pas de s’en séparer. Le plus souvent, ils ne veulent pas admettre qu’ils les font souffrir.
C’est un trouble compulsif dont les individus touchés sont seuls, coupés de leur famille et vivants une rupture sociale avérée. Il est important de noter que le syndrome de Noé concerne exclusivement les animaux et non pas les objets. La personne qui souffre de ce problème ressent le besoin irrépressible de sauver des animaux, toujours plus d’animaux, sans avoir les moyens de les assumer, ni forcément de leur procurer les soins nécessaires. Elle croit réellement sauver les bêtes qu’elle recueille. Ces hommes ou ces femmes sont souvent persuadés d’avoir un don particulier pour comprendre les animaux recueillis. Ils se sentent investis de la mission de les protéger et les sauver. Très attachée à ses animaux, ils ne peuvent pas s’en séparer et ne se rendent pas compte qu’ils s’en occupent mal et que la vie des bêtes est même parfois en danger. Inconscient de la souffrance qu’il provoque, le patient vit dans le déni. Ce comportement peut parfois entraîner de graves conséquences pour les animaux car plus l’accumulation est grande, plus sont les difficultés à s’en occuper correctement.
La personne atteinte du syndrome a un comportement addictif car le syndrome de Noé fait partie des troubles obsessionnels compulsifs, souvent lié à un manque affectif qui date de l’enfance. L’individu ressent une sorte de pulsion de réparation face à la vulnérabilité de l’animal. De ce fait, si les animaux récupérés sont vieux ou malades, l’importance du secours apportés est encore plus forte.
Les conséquences de cette accumulation excessive peuvent être tragiques car la personne peut rapidement se retrouver dépassée par la situation et ne peut plus maîtriser son environnement comme la santé de ses pensionnaires, le rapport à l’hygiène se dégrade, ce qui entraîne une réelle souffrance animale du fait d’une malnutrition ou d’animaux mal soignés qui peuvent malheureusement mourir de faim. Le patient ne conçoit pas que l’animal doit être considéré pour ce qu’il est et pas uniquement pour ce qu’il apporte : combler une carence affective, réparer un traumatisme.
Les traitements actuels sont les mêmes que pour les autres accumulations compulsives pathologiques. Cependant, ils fonctionnement moins bien sur la personne souffrant du syndrome de Noé. Malheureusement une intervention, sans traitement préalable, entraîne une récidive dans quasiment 100% des cas. Le reste des cas étant des suicides parce que les malades, privés de leurs animaux, mettent fin à leurs jours.
C’est un problème très répandu, qui cause plus de souffrance animale que tous les actes de cruauté intentionnels réunis. Il est nettement sous-estimé. Il est donc essentiel d’éduquer et de sensibiliser les gens à cette pathologie pour arrêter les dérives et éviter les situations de maltraitance.
Le syndrome de Noé peut se retrouver à tous les âges : quel que soit le sexe ou la condition socio-économique de la personne. Mais des études récentes montrent qu’il touche majoritairement: les femmes, les personnes seules et en particulier les personnes âgées souffrant de carence affective, abus, traumatismes.
Terminant mes lectures, j’ai fermé mes bouquins, mon ordi et j’ai accouru vers la salle où se trouvent mes chats… Ils étaient là, bien à leur aise, chacun dans son panier. Leurs litières étaient propres. Je les ai bien regardés ; ils étaient bien portants, certains, même, étaient potelés. La salle d’une quarantaine de mètres était assez spacieuse pour dix chats.
Alors, ouf ! Je me suis sentie bien puisque j’ai pensé ne pas être atteinte de cet horrible syndrome de Noé.
