Il se souvient avec tendresse des matins dorés. Des champs à perte de vue et vergers aux fruits sucrés. Des courses effrénées, du skateboard téméraire, des chutes oubliées. Cette liberté pure, il veut l’offrir aujourd’hui à chaque enfant de Barbara.
Une nature qu’il refuse de voir mourir dans la municipalité de Barbara.
Ces souvenirs l’ont attaché à sa terre comme les racines à la montagne. Mais son cœur s’est serré en voyant les arbres abattus, les collines bétonnées. La municipalité précédente, dit-il, a remplacé la verdure par la grisaille. Même les bancs publics n’étaient que blocs de béton. C’est pour cela qu’il a osé se porter candidat. Pour défendre un arbre. Une forêt. Un cri silencieux.
Un maire qui parle aux aigles.
Ralph aime la nature. Et les animaux aussi. Il produit un court-métrage pour encourager la tolérance envers la vie animale. Un policier de Barbara y répond, sauvant un aigle blessé par un chasseur. Il le soigne. Il le libère. Et l’histoire devient symbole.
La promesse des 35 000 arbres pour la municipalité de Barbara.
Son projet le plus cher? Le reboisement. 35 000 arbres pour réparer ce qui fut détruit.
Il ne veut pas seulement gérer la municipalité, il veut en rêver. Et que ses rêves prennent racine dans la terre.
Des routes pour les cyclistes, des livres pour les rêveurs.
Avec le conseil municipal, il aménage une route spéciale pour les vélos, loin du danger.
Il crée aussi un parc public, pour que les villageois s’y retrouvent. Les pique-niques y sont encouragés. Mais dans les forêts, ils sont interdits. Par sécurité. Contre le feu. Par amour. Et dans ce même parc, il installe un circuit santé, avec des appareils pour le cœur. Il y ajoute une bibliothèque de plein air, où les mots dansent à l’ombre des branches.
Une économie enracinée dans le local.
Le jeune maire croit en la productivité. Il crée un guide professionnel, financé par des sponsors. Un outil concret pour soutenir les artisans, commerçants et producteurs du village. Bientôt, il existera aussi en application. Accessible à tous. Simple. Transparent.
Le marché des mains libres.
Un autre rêve devient réalité :
Un marché du village, sur l’autoroute Tripoli-Beyrouth. Le terrain ? Offert par des habitants généreux. Les stands ? Gratuits. Les produits ? Du coin : figues, paniers en osier, poissons, lainages… L’économie s’épanouit au rythme de la terre.
La municipalité comme espoir de justice.
Pour Ralph Nader, la municipalité est un levier d’action, pas une simple institution.
Mais il sait qu’il agit dans un cadre trop étroit. La décentralisation administrative est bloquée. Il la juge vitale. Sans elle, dit-il, les projets stagnent, les maladies prolifèrent, et les rêves s’étouffent. Il fut critiqué pour avoir nettoyé le terrain des éoliennes, rempli de ferraille et de gravats. Mais il assume. Il agit pour la santé publique.
Une vision, une promesse.
Avant de partir, il me regarde avec la fougue d’un jeune homme :
« Si, par miracle, la décentralisation est accordée, je vous promets deux choses :
