Le cauchemar commence à l’Hôtel Mumbai.
Il y a dix ans, un 26 novembre 2008, dix jeunes hommes venus de l’ombre ont abordé les côtes de Mumbai et de l’Hôtel Mumbai. Silencieux. Invisibles. Ils étaient les armes d’un groupe terroriste pakistanais : Lashkar-e-Taiba. Armés de fusils d’assaut, de grenades, d’engins de mort artisanaux, ils se sont dissous dans la ville comme un poison. En trois jours, ils ont fait basculer Mumbai dans la nuit. Plus de 170 morts. Des dizaines de blessés. Une ville agenouillée.
L’hôtel Mumbai, un hommage en images.
Dans son film « Hôtel Mumbai », le réalisateur Anthony Maras fait revivre ces heures sombres. Présenté pour la première fois au Festival international du film de Toronto,
le film fut projeté au Liban… puis mystérieusement retiré. Avant de tourner, l’équipe s’est documentée. Mais, comme souvent au cinéma, la fiction dévie de la vérité, non pour la trahir, mais pour mieux la traduire.
Un piège à huis clos.
Dans l’hôtel Mumbai, le personnel et les clients sont pris au piège. Les terroristes rôdent, méthodiques, meurtriers. Les forces de sécurité ? Absentes. Il faudra près de dix heures pour que les commandos du NSG atteignent les lieux. Le temps que les soldats arrivent de Delhi, les civils sont seuls, face à l’inhumain. Ce n’est que le 29 novembre au matin que l’hôtel Taj est enfin libéré.
La lumière dans l’ombre à l’Hôtel Mumbai.
Mais le film ne montre pas seulement l’horreur. Il révèle aussi la lumière. La bravoure. L’altruisme. Le personnel de l’hôtel ne fuit pas. Des cuisiniers s’interposent. Certains reviennent même après s’être échappés. Ils veulent aider les clients à survivre. Ils préfèrent mourir debout que s’enfuir sans un mot. Maras lui-même s’en étonne : « Je ne comprenais pas. Qui étaient ces gens ? Pourquoi ont-ils choisi de rester ? »
Entre réalité et fiction.
Tous les personnages ne sont pas réels. Mais tous sont vrais, d’une certaine manière. Hemant Oberoi, le chef exécutif du Taj, est bien réel. Un monument de la cuisine indienne. Un homme debout au cœur du chaos. Arjun, le serveur protecteur, est un mélange. Inspiré d’un serveur du Taj et d’un agent de sécurité non armé, il incarne ceux qui ont guidé, caché, secouru. Les clients aussi sont des échos. Zahra et David ? Deux couples mêlés en un seul. Des parents prêts à se séparer pour sauver au moins un des leurs. Vasili ? Un amalgame entre un homme d’affaires et un ancien des forces spéciales.
Tous deux étaient présents à l’hôtel Mumbai, ce soir-là.
Une tension insoutenable à l’Hôtel Mumbai.
Le spectateur est happé. Prisonnier du récit comme les personnages le sont dans les couloirs du Taj. Chaque silence est une menace. Chaque cri, un avertissement. Quand le bébé de David pleure dans le placard, on retient son souffle. La lumière, filtrée. Le cadrage, oppressant. Tout concourt à créer cette tension poétique propre au style de Maras.
L’hôtel Mumbai : plus qu’un film.
Ce n’est pas seulement un thriller. C’est un hommage. Une prière. Un cri de mémoire pour ceux qui ont vécu l’enfer et ont choisi de rester humains.
