La Cène; une scène maintes fois peinte à travers les siècles.
Plusieurs artistes ont représenté le dernier souper de Jésus-Christ avec ses disciples, aussi appelé La Cène. De la Renaissance au Pop Art, cette scène biblique a inspiré les plus grands. Parmi les versions les plus connues, on retrouve celles de Dirk Bouts (1468), Léonardo Da Vinci (1498), Hans Holbein (1525), Tintoret (1593), Rubens (1632), Philippe de Champaigne (vers 1652), William Blake (1799), Salvador Dali (1955), Andy Warhol (1986) et David LaChapelle (2003).

L’incontournable chef-d’œuvre de Léonardo Da Vinci : La Cène.
Malgré ces nombreuses interprétations, c’est La Cène de Léonardo Da Vinci qui demeure la plus célèbre. Peinte entre 1494 et 1498 sous le gouvernement de Lodovico il Moro, cette œuvre monumentale est unique, voire épique. Elle mesure 4,60 mètres de haut sur 8,80 mètres de large. Ce tableau est le fruit d’une recherche minutieuse, appuyée sur une infinité de croquis préparatoires.
Comme tout grand artiste, Léonardo a voulu traiter le sujet d’une manière inédite. Il a donc abandonné la méthode traditionnelle de la fresque. Au lieu de peindre sur plâtre humide, il a choisi de peindre “à sec” directement sur le mur du réfectoire de l’ancien couvent dominicain de Santa Maria delle Grazie, à Milan. Il a utilisé une technique à la détrempe et à l’huile sur une préparation de plâtre sec.

Une technique audacieuse, mais fragile.
Léonardo voulait pouvoir retoucher son œuvre au fil de l’avancement. C’est pourquoi il a préféré une méthode inappropriée aux fresques : la tempera et les huiles sur un mur imperméabilisé au plâtre sec. Malheureusement, cette innovation a causé des problèmes dès le début. Le tableau a commencé à se détériorer rapidement.
Pire encore, le mur choisi pour accueillir l’œuvre se trouvait sur une façade exposée à l’humidité. Cela a empêché la peinture de sécher correctement. Avec le temps, la fresque s’est effritée, menaçant de disparaître.
La Cène; une œuvre qui a marqué l’histoire de l’art.
Malgré tout, La Dernière Cène de Léonardo Da Vinci reste l’une des œuvres les plus marquantes de tous les temps. Son approche novatrice et son impact sur l’art sont inégalés. Les artistes contemporains de Léonardo la considéraient déjà comme « la peinture qui parle » – une chose jamais vue auparavant.
Cette fresque géante est un parfait exemple de l’art chrétien de la Renaissance. Elle illustre le verset 13:21 de l’Évangile selon Saint Jean, où Jésus révèle que l’un des apôtres va le trahir. Léonardo a su capturer les émotions de chacun des disciples, donnant à chacun une expression et une réaction bien distinctes.


Une composition complexe et profondément humaine.
Au-delà de l’anecdote biblique, l’œuvre transmet un message théologique profond. Mais ce qui la rend exceptionnelle, c’est la complexité de sa composition. L’usage de la perspective, l’attention portée aux gestes, aux regards et à la psychologie des personnages, font de cette fresque une pièce maîtresse de la Renaissance. Elle a même établi plusieurs des conventions esthétiques du mouvement.
Pour représenter au mieux cette diversité humaine, Léonardo a pris le temps de trouver un modèle différent pour chacun des personnages.
Une légende touchante autour du modèle de Judas.
Une légende populaire raconte que Léonardo aurait trouvé le modèle de Jésus à la cathédrale de Milan. Il aurait alors peint tous les apôtres en 11 mois, sauf Judas. Trouver un visage qui incarne la trahison l’a bloqué pendant deux ans.
Il aurait cherché dans les quartiers les plus sombres de la ville. Finalement, il trouva un homme dont le visage semblait incarner la perfidie. Léonardo l’invita dans son atelier, et l’homme accepta.
Mais en cours de séance, l’homme fondit en larmes. Il expliqua alors à Léonardo qu’il avait déjà posé pour lui quelques années auparavant – pour le rôle de Jésus. Cette histoire bouleversante symbolise à elle seule la profondeur humaine de l’œuvre.

Un message universel et spirituel.
Certains pensent que La Cène cache des messages secrets. D’aucuns vont jusqu’à affirmer que la figure à la gauche de Jésus (donc à sa main droite) ne serait pas Jean, mais une femme – peut-être Marie-Madeleine.
Mais au-delà des théories, le vrai message de cette œuvre immortelle pourrait bien être celui-ci :
« En chacun de nous, il y a un Jésus et un Judas. Le plus grand défi est de devenir la meilleure version de soi-même. »
C’est par l’ouverture à la lumière du Christ qu’on peut atteindre cette beauté intérieure. En l’invitant dans notre vie, nous avançons vers ce que Le Bon Dieu a voulu pour chacun de nous.
