En 1992, elle a fait une apparition sinistrement célèbre dans Saturday Night Live. Elle y a déchiré la photo du pape en morceaux et demandé aux téléspectateurs de « combattre le véritable ennemi ». Suite à cette mésaventure, elle fut huée par la foule mais elle n’a pas baissé les bras. Au contraire, elle a continué à se battre contre l’Église catholique.
Un incident qui a nuit à sa carrière.
L’incident de La SNL a clairement nuit à l’évolution de sa carrière, mais elle a facilité la tâche de ses ennemis en se montrant totalement intransigeante. La sérénité nécessaire pour accepter les choses qu’elle ne pouvait pas changer ne faisait pas vraiment partie de son répertoire. Et elle était une cible facile, avec son crâne chauve et son indignation vertueuse. En réalité, elle était timide, douce, beaucoup plus drôle et effacée que son image publique ne le laissait supposer. Elle était Irlandaise, après tout. La caricature est restée et l’Amérique est passée à autre chose. Alors que l’Irlande réalisait peu à peu à quel point La Rebelle avait été clairvoyante sur de nombreux sujets, à commencer par l’Église.
Une fin tragique pour La Rebelle.
L’année dernière, elle a perdu son fils. Aujourd’hui, c’est elle qui a décidé de partir aussi bien trop tôt, après avoir lutté pendant des années contre des problèmes de santé mentale. Comme elle en avait l’habitude, elle n’a pas mâché ses mots à ce sujet. Sinéad O’Connor n’est plus de ce monde, mais j’aime à penser que sa vraie personnalité est toujours là, dans les chansons qu’elle a chantées, dans les mots qu’elle a écrits, dans l’injustice qu’elle a déplorée, et surtout dans la voix qu’elle a si généreusement partagée avec le monde.
Elle était plus qu’une chanteuse, plus qu’une interprète de chansons. C’était quelqu’un qui disait la vérité et qui n’avait pas peur de la vérité. Et qu’a-t-elle dit de mal ? Sur les abus de l’église ? A propos de la santé mentale? A propos des enfants du monde ? Elle avait raison. C’était une personne très compatissante et pleine d’âme.
