Basquiat; un artiste controversé.
Mort d’une overdose à 27 ans, Jean-Michel Basquiat est l’un des artistes les plus controversés du XXe siècle. Certains rejettent son travail, notamment ses graffitis. D’autres voient en lui un génie avant-gardiste.
Origines et enfance de Basquiat.
Né à Brooklyn en 1960, d’une mère portoricaine et d’un père haïtien, Basquiat grandit entre Puerto Rico et New York. À 7 ans, il est renversé par une voiture. À l’hôpital, il reçoit un livre d’anatomie de sa mère, Matilde, qui l’initie aussi très tôt aux musées et aux langues. Cette expérience marque le début de son éveil artistique.
Premiers pas dans le graffiti.
Après la séparation de ses parents, il quitte le domicile familial alors qu’il est encore jeune. Il commence à taguer dans les rues, signant « Samo » avec son ami Al Diaz. Ce pseudonyme, acronyme de « Same Old Shit », devient rapidement célèbre. Sa signature est surmontée d’une couronne, qu’on retrouvera dans ses œuvres futures.
Un art engagé et identitaire.
Basquiat explore l’univers underground et fréquente les graffitistes. Il abandonne ses études. Il veut combler l’absence des artistes noirs dans les musées américains. Son art devient un cri contre le racisme et une affirmation de la négritude. Influencé par le métissage culturel, il développe un style néo-expressionniste, souvent sombre et angoissé.
Ascension de Basquiat dans le monde de l’art.
À la fin des années 1970, il devient une figure de l’East Village, où Keith Haring graffe aussi. Il travaille en solo ou en collectif, crée un groupe de rock et tourne dans un film indépendant. C’est là qu’il rencontre Andy Warhol, figure majeure de la Pop culture. Grâce à lui, Basquiat gagne en visibilité.
Reconnaissance et succès.
En 1981, sa carrière décolle. Le magazine Artforum lui consacre un article, « The Radiant Child ». La galeriste Annina Nosei lui offre un atelier dans sa galerie. En 1982, il expose chez Larry Gagosian. Il devient alors un artiste prisé des musées et du marché de l’art.
Déclin et mort.
Malgré le succès, Basquiat lutte contre la drogue et l’alcool. Il vit reclus, peint, et regarde la télévision. La mort d’Andy Warhol en 1987 le bouleverse. Il s’isole davantage. Un voyage à Hawaï ne suffit pas à l’aider. Il est retrouvé mort à New York, le 12 août 1988.
L’héritage durable de Basquiat.
En 2017, l’une de ses œuvres atteint 110,5 millions de dollars aux enchères. Ce record confirme que Basquiat, disparu depuis 30 ans, reste une figure incontournable du marché de l’art contemporain. Il est aujourd’hui l’un des artistes américains les plus chers au monde.
