L’œuvre résulte d’un « rêve cosmique » fait quelques années auparavant.

Le Christ, dont le visage est absent, s’élève en position de crucifixion. Il se dirige vers un noyau atomique ou un soleil, symbolisant son esprit unificateur. La toile est une explosion de couleurs et de formes géométriques. Elle évoque la beauté du monde. Le Christ flotte au-dessus d’une ligne horizontale basse, dévoilant un paysage maritime. Son corps, dans un triangle parfait, pénètre un cercle doré. Ensemble, ils résument l’univers.
L’Ascension et la signification de la Résurrection.
le Christ ressuscité est représenté comme une flèche transperçant les cieux. Ce que l’on voit, ce sont ses pieds et ses mains. Ses pieds ont arpenté la terre pour rencontrer les Hommes. Ses mains crispées rappellent la croix, mais il est ressuscité. Nous le voyons d’en bas, car nous sommes encore sur terre.
La Vierge Marie et l’Esprit Saint.
Au sommet du tableau, la Vierge Marie pleure la Passion de son fils, comme les Vierges flamandes. Juste en dessous d’elle, la colombe représentant l’Esprit Saint plane. Ses ailes déployées irradient des rayons vers nous, traçant le chemin qui introduit le Christ dans l’espace céleste. Là, il retrouve le Père pour nous ouvrir le ciel.
La symbolique de l’Ascension.
Le passage de l’espace maritime à l’espace céleste, entre le bas et le haut du tableau, symbolise la Pâque. Il représente la traversée vers la Lumière impérissable du Royaume de Dieu. Le Christ, par sa Résurrection et son Ascension, introduit l’humanité à ce royaume.
Un pont entre ciel et terre.
Ce tableau est un concentré de symbolisme. Jésus est celui qui relie le ciel et la terre, Dieu et les Hommes, comme un pont.
Le sens de notre existence.
Dali révèle à travers cette œuvre le sens de notre existence : être avec Dieu pour l’éternité. L’accès à la gloire du Ciel, que l’Ascension nous fait espérer, n’est possible qu’après le passage par la mer des douleurs de la Passion.
