Kathryn Stott est reconnue comme soliste de concerto, récitaliste et chambriste.
Elle se spécialise dans le répertoire classique anglais et français, la musique contemporaine et le tango. Grove Music Online décrit son jeu comme étant « marqué par un sens vif de l’immédiateté et de la communication personnelle ». Quant au journal The Times, il la considère comme « l’une des pianistes les plus polyvalentes du circuit ».
L’histoire de « Ol’ Man River ».
Cette chanson a été écrite en 1927 par Oscar Hammerstein II, sur une musique de Jerome Kern. Elle constitue le thème principal de la comédie musicale Show Boat.
L’œuvre raconte la vie et les combats des travailleurs afro-américains, à travers les yeux d’un docker noir.
Une chanson symbole de lutte.
La lutte évoquée dans « Ol’ Man River » a commencé après la guerre de Sécession (1861-1865). Elle s’est poursuivie avec le Mouvement des droits civiques, qui visait l’obtention et la jouissance des droits civiques pour les Afro-Américains.
Un classique de la chanson américaine.
Aujourd’hui, « Ol’ Man River » est considérée comme un classique.
Elle a été reprise par de nombreux musiciens et groupes de renom : Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Django Reinhardt, Paul Robeson, Ruth Brown, John William, Nino Ferrer, Sammy Davis Jr. et Art Pepper.
